M. C. Slavich (Mikey) is a filmmaker and artist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A graduate of the University of New Mexico, he built an interdisciplinary foundation in film, experimental art, and technology, arriving with an intuitive, multifaceted approach to storytelling.
The development of his work has grown out of a fascination and, if not a preoccupation, with dreams, nightmares, psyche, and self. Queering and embodying existential themes, Mikey presents surreal, introspective, and often enigmatic worlds. He seeks beauty in the ordinary and simplicity within the impenetrable.
His latest project, FANTASMA, which premiered at the 101st Burning of Zozobra, is a surreal performance film honoring the enduring artistry and cultural legacy of New Mexico, weaving movement, fashion, music, and land into a sweeping, experimental cinematic experience.
His prior film, Let the World Go on Sleeping, received international recognition, earning awards for Best Indie Film, Best Director, and Best New Mexico Short.
Working as an artist, Mikey has received multiple commissions from the City of Albuquerque. In 2021, Slavich invented a colorful, lightweight, inflatable "dreamscape". FLOATIE was installed at Balloon Fiesta Park, flooding the crowds with bubble balloons and vinyl-dressed performers. Featuring the festival and the musical acts of Big Gigantic, Tokimonsta, and Hannah Watts.
In 2018, Slavich designed and fabricated A colossal mechanical puppet. "Cuckoo Beest" debuted at the Arts and Culture festival SOMOS. The LED-infused nightmare-fueled Road Runner and costumed characters performed in tandem with the musical groups BTSM, Whipped Cream, and Chicano Batman.
Professionally, he works in the New Mexico film industry as a camera assistant and is a member of IATSE Local 600, contributing to local feature films and television productions. His credits include Dead Letters, Sunlight, How to Blow Up a Pipeline, Flamin’ Hot, A Really Loud House, and Dark Winds.
