FANTASMA is a journey through movement highlighting the excellence and enduring legacy of New Mexico’s artistic communities.

Curated for Zozobra 101 by the International Museum of Dance, under the artistic direction of Angel Guanajuato and Gabriel Carrión-Gonzales, directed by M.C. Slavich, and Cinematography by Megan Noce.

Angel and Gabriel carefully curated stories that represent the enduring spirit of these communities and the revitalization of these cultural legacies, hoping to plant the seeds for a renewed New Mexico Arts landscape. Calling in the work of Josh Tafoya (Vogue 2025), a Taoseño Rio Grande Valley local who explores conversations of Indigenous identity within the Hispanic/ Latino community. UNBOUND, a performance ritual honoring and uplifting the lives of the Genizaro. Lightning Boy Foundation, passing traditional indigenous hoop dancing on to the next generation of Northern New Mexico youth. ArtPxpi, a local Albuquerque multidisciplinary artist inspiring innovation in the next generation of creators. Music Artist, Jupiter’s Baby, producing the title track Fan.Tas.Ma featured in the film. Choreography by lifelong Burqueño, Gabriel Carrion-Gonzales.

Filmed at the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument – Quarai.
Quarai was chosen for its deep historical significance and personal connection to several members of the collective - The Genízaros.

The Genízaro people are descendants of enslaved Indigenous individuals brought into Spanish colonial society and their kin, who built the Quarai pueblo (Tiwa/Tewa enslaved women and children) and many other places throughout the region.

It was our intention, along with the blessing and opening words of Future Tiwa Elder and current NM dance legend Than Povi Martinez, that we entered this space with humility and reverence. To inhabit it for a fleeting moment, refresh its rooms with creative energy, and leave peacefully with a deeper respect for its complex past.

We acknowledge this land and its difficult history. It is our hope to continue the healing magic of the arts, one memory at a time.

Let’s make something together
